The Cost of Higher Education

Recently, we have discussed whether the price of higher education is truly worth the price. It became clear that each student did have a different idea on this topic. Reading the 3 articles did allow each group to come to a general consensus based on what the authors expressed. All three writers expressed how they felt about college and allowed us to explore outside sources and their beliefs based on higher education

Each articles did discuss different aspects but they shared the following themes:

     1. The authors generally think liberal arts makes you develop good character.
     2. The authors think liberal arts will contributes to being more well rounded in the world.
     3. The authors think they understand higher education more than the average person.

Certain aspects I did generally notice were repetitive and some were assumptions that seemed very off. I say this because, one writer in particular stated that pursuing a higher education was not worth it yet he holds a degree himself. It seemed somewhat hypocritical to state that it is not worth it while they work in the job they do and the areas they do because of their degree. Not only this, but it seemed to be pretty common the writers took this as an opportunity to discuss how liberal arts would be extremely beneficial to the student. The proceeded to correlate a liberal arts degree to being an individual of great values and grandiose range that will prepare them in real life careers. Although it may seem like a very good point, the group discussion showed that many believed otherwise for people who want to focus their energy into one field.

Sure, higher education may lead to debt and financial struggles but that will not change depending on the degree achieved. One will still end up graduating with debt and it truly wont contribute to the price in a drastic manner. Overall, the articles did provide insight but they did not really adhere to the debate of the true value of education. They mostly defended the idea of pursuing an education within liberal arts but the aspect of educational value is a given, the true debate lies within the amount of debt students will encounter and how it will negatively impact them, their financial stability, and credit in the long run.
