Environment's correlation with Lifestyle

Image
Many people think life is truly dictated through our actions and what we decide to pursue in life. Though this may be true, there are more external and even internal factors that may dictate where people end up. An environment is one of the strongest influences that a young individual as their development is typically strongly influenced from where they reside and come from. It is something that cannot be avoided, especially as a dependent. Most of us will always think back to where we came from because we are a product of our environment. To put it into perspective, if we are surrounded by a negative environment then a lot of our experiences may result in negative experiences and vice versa. Though environment does appear to only entail residence, it also includes family, friends and even how that changes one's character. Both of the Wes’ resided in a negative environment in which they lacked a fatherly figure, were exposed to drugs and received little to no guidan

The Power of Actions Over Words

Most people will agree that experience is life's best teacher. Many of us recognize that we've learned best when it came from a harsh instance that was so impactful, it became an instant lesson. When taught through experience, it is something we carry with us as if we've been through a battle; since it is something that no one had to tell us or give us, we earned it painfully. In the Other Wes Moore, we can see that this one of the most outstanding parts of the plot. When Joy is scolding Wes about his academic life, she approaches it by relating to his love of hip-hop. She proceeds to point out that he doesn't lack intelligence but in fact, he just chooses to memorize and focus on things that are irrelevant. The other Wes then sees it as  lack of acceptance towards his life since she merely focuses on external factors. Though these words do have meaning, they are simply just words to Wes and he sees it as a mother just scolding him regularly. The reason that he wa

The importance of Parental Relationships

Family dynamics have such an important role in our development as children. The absence of a prominent male figure can alter how an individual may view his or her life. Moore, a character in "The Other Wes Moore", brings up the similarities between him and the other Wes Moore including the fact that they both lacked a father in their lives. The influence their fathers had in each of Wes' lives is not something that goes unnoted. Wes Moore lost his father at a young age but since his father has a lasting print in media (radio show), he still finds it inevitable to incorporate this into his writing. Meanwhile, the other Wes sees his father's absence as something more than a painful passing; he understood the concept of abandonment.      I, too, faced the harsh reality of lacking a father in my life. My experience was more like the other Wes Moore's story of abandonment, yet my life appears to have many similarities to the first Wes. My father was present

The Cost of Higher Education

Image
Recently, we have discussed whether the price of higher education is truly worth the price. It became clear that each student did have a different idea on this topic. Reading the 3 articles did allow each group to come to a general consensus based on what the authors expressed. All three writers expressed how they felt about college and allowed us to explore outside sources and their beliefs based on higher education Each articles did discuss different aspects but they shared the following themes:      1. The authors generally think liberal arts makes you develop good character.      2. The authors think liberal arts will contributes to being more well rounded in the world.      3. The authors think they understand higher education more than the average person. Certain aspects I did generally notice were repetitive and some were assumptions that seemed very off. I say this because, one writer in particular stated that pursuing a higher education was not worth it yet he holds

The Impact of the Fast Food Module

Image
After visiting different sources and even observing the recent debate on government versus personal control over fast food, It is only right that after all the insight, we would have formulated an opinion. Especially if we recall that as a class, we’ve recently discussed the flip sides that exist when debating fast food and its detriment. There is no question that fast food in itself is extremely harmful to the populations health, which is why we allocate so much time and effort into further acknowledging how it affects the consumers.   The debate conducted in Critical Reading, Writing and Speaking,   highlighted that there can be many opinions that revolve around this topic thus making it easy to debate. Many things we covered were likely discussed in the students previous years, so what made this module any different? In retrospect, one may believe that since they understand the impact then, they understand the concept completely but that resulted to be incorrect. Once the docu

The Dichotomy in Pop Culture!

Image
It’s rare you’ll ever see someone speak on the benefits of Pop Culture, yet Steve Johnson (writer of the article “ Watching TV Makes You Smarter) highlights the positive effects it has this new generation. The author highlights that in order to watch Television in this day in age, we have to have a certain level of intelligence to be able to understand the pacing of the show and the complexity due to multiple plots. The word choice Johnson uses indicate that it is more than just a matter of focus. At some point, the author describes a show and uses the word ”analytical” (Johnson, 2005, pg. 285) to explain the relief of analytical work the viewer should do if the characters give additional information. Thus suggesting that some of the work viewers do is indeed analytical which states they are being logical. The fact that television has enhanced its plot, Johnson’s said “It’s the willingness to immerse the audience in information that most viewers won’t understand” in addition.

The Influence of Literature

Image
My most intense memory regarding literature includes the infamous Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You’ll Go . My brother thought it was time for me to pick up a book and learn to read on my own and as any young child, I was mesmerized by the rhymes and of course the non-existent places I could go. The words came to life, the bright colors only made it more convincing that reading was for me. After that memorable occasion, I became more aware and noticed how present literature truly was. I noticed both my mother and my father deeply entranced in books written by Pablo Coelho but I was deeply disappointed when I realized the content was too advanced for a young child. Though I was young, I understood that books did contribute to ones level of intelligence and wisdom, so I aspired to be like my parents. I took initiative by asking questions, “Dad, what is this book about?” or “Mom, why do you like that author so much” but I was never pleased with the response. I attended a school where
